Internet Safety Links

 

PBS Frontline: Growing Up Online - excellent series on how the Internet and new communication tools and devices are changing the way our children are growing up. This is geared primarily for parents. The series is viewable online.

 

GetNetWise - This site's Online Safety Guide covers, by age level and activity type, the online risks children and teenagers face. There is also a directory of online safety resources including filtering products, advice on reporting Internet safety problems, and a guide to children's Web sites. Sponsored by "Internet industry corporations and public interest organizations to help ensure that families have safe, constructive, and educational or entertaining online experiences."

 

 

How to Keep Safe in Chat Rooms - This site provides information on the dangers of using unmoderated Internet chat rooms, and aims to "stimulate parents and caregivers to take greater interest in what their children are doing on the net and help them ensure that we all use the net safely." Includes an online chat simulation game, parents' guide, links to good chat room examples, and recommendations for keeping safe in online chat rooms. From Childnet International.

 

 

I-Safe America - "I-SAFE America is an Internet Safety Education Foundation with major emphasis on empowering kids/teens with knowledge on how to act responsibly and be safe online." The site includes a description of programs and materials that can be ordered for free to help instruct students, parents, educators, community leaders, and law enforcement nationwide. Features chat rooms and an online magazine for children.

 

 

NetSmartz Workshop: Keeping Kids and Teens Safe on the Internet - This site "uses age-appropriate, 3-D activities to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet." Features online and "offline" activities, safety pledges, news, safety tips, and statistics. Topics include social networking sites, passwords, computer viruses, email, file sharing, and more. From the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and National Boys and Girls Clubs of America.

 

Guide to Keeping Your Kids Safe Online - Tips for teens and parents to stay safe while online. Covers social networks like MySpace and Facebook.

 

 

CyberSmart - student lesson plans and activities

 

 

SafeKids.com - A guide for families for "making the Internet and technology fun, safe and productive." Features articles and information on online safety for parents and children, covering topics such as computer security, chat rooms, spyware, cell phones, and more.
