Landmarks of the World in Google Earth

Introduction

Using Google Earth, students will create a multimedia geo-tour showcasing different landmarks of the world. At the end of this unit, students will be able to:

  • locate geographical places
  • create placemarks
  • link website articles
  • embed pictures
  • cite resources

Learn the basics of navigating Google Earth

Procedure

  • Open Google Earth and create a folder in the Places section. This folder will hold your placemarks.
    • Click on My Places to highlight
    • On the menu, click Add - Folder
    • Type in a name for the folder and click OK
  • Locate geographical places according to teacher instructions. See video below to learn how to find locations.

  • Create Placemarks in Google Earth making sure the placemarks are located in your folder that you created. See video below

  • Once you have created all of your placemarks for your location and placed them in the folder you created, you will begin creating content for some of your placemarks that are significant. Please include:
    • a link to a Wikipedia article
    • a photo or two
    • important or interesting information written in your own words
    • a sources (or bibliography) section with links to all your resources including pictures
  • To create the content, use the Online HTML Editor to create your stuff and then copy/paste the source code into your placemark.
  • Extra Credit: Create an image overlay directly on the map that adds flair to the Placemark. For instance, you could locate a picture of a country flag and place it near your Placemark.
  • When finished, export the KMZ file to your H drive and post to your wiki page.
