Private vs Personal Information

Page history last edited by John Maklary 1 yr ago

In this lesson, you will:

  1. Differentiate between personal and private information and how to better protect yourself while online.

  2. Write a short autobiography using "safe" personal information (no private information).

  3. Locate two Internet safety websites, evaluate them and write a review of how the site would benefit parents, students and teachers.

Watch the following videos about posting personal and private information on the Internet.

Discussion Questions

  1. What were some of the things the girls did that didn't keep them safe?

  2. What should they have done differently?

  3. Have you ever been in a similar situation?

Activity Websites - under the Private and Personal Information section, click through some of the websites listed. Take note of the information the site is asking for if you wanted to register and login.

  • What types of information are the sites asking for?

  • How could this information affect your personal safety?

Discussion Activity - do not print, just read.

  • How does the information presented relate to the website(s) we just visited?

Personal vs. Private Information

Autobiography

  • Write a short autobiography about yourself using personal information but NOT private information. Post it to the Internet Safety Wiki page.

Internet Safety Site Review

Using Google, locate a website that addresses the issue of Internet safety. Choose a site that would be useful to students, parents and/or teachers in their understanding of how to stay safe while online.

Print out one copy of a website evaluation page. You will read the information and then select one of the sites you chose and evaluate that site according to the sheet. Answer each of the questions on the sheet and total the score at the bottom. You will turn this in at the end of the class.

Then, visit your autobiography page and add your site, provide a link, and write a review explaining why this site would be useful to learn more about. Questions to consider are:

  • Who would benefit from this site? Why?

  • Are there any activities or games on the site to help explain Internet Safety?

  • Using the evaluation page as a guide, describe the purpose of the site and how well it delivers it's message.

  • Is there anything missing that you feel should be included in the site?

  • Anything else you feel is significant or important?

Our goal is to create a list of student evaluated sites that parents, teachers, and children can use to learn more about internet safety.
