This Day in History

For this project, students will use the Internet to research famous historical events that happened on their birthday. Using Microsoft Word, students will create a formatted document highlighting four events that occured. All resources used will be properly cited using MLA format. Students will be assesssed using a scoring guide.

Objectives

  • Students will learn how to transfer text and graphics from the web to a word processor
  • Students will learn formatting techniques: margins, fonts, page breaks, headers/footers, text wrapping, and inserting images
  • Students will learn how to cite sources from the Internet

Internet Research

  • Visit the History Channel's This Day in History page.
  • Find at least four events that happened on your birthday that interest you.
  • Copy and Paste (or Paste Special - Unformatted Text) text from the web to your Word document.
  • Locate at least one picture from the web that matches each of the events and copy and paste to your document. You will have a total of four pictures. Wikipedia and Answers.com are good places to find pictures on your topic AND they provide an easy way to get the citation.
  • Use the "cite this" feature from the sites you visit for your information and pictures. If there is none, you should visit Citation Machine or BibMe to create your citation and copy/paste it to the bottom of your Word document.

Set up Word Document

  • Set all margins to 1 inch.
  • Set font to be Tahoma, 12 point
  • Format the wrapping of your picture
  • Insert page breaks as needed (your document will be at least five pages long -- one for each event and one for the citation page)
  • Insert one horizontal line after your heading and before your title
  • Insert a page number and date footer to your document
  • Format footer font to be Tahoma, 10 point
  • Check your document, save and print it out
